  • CommentaryFranz Kline is one of the leading exponents of American ›Abstract Expressionism‹. At the end of the 1940s he produced his first paintings with bold, abruptly broken off black color strips against a white background, creating a visual staccato. Defining the image are the energy-charged gestures and the risky balance of light and dark which Kline had tested in numerous studies.
In the 1950s his compositions became completely abstract. With few exceptions, from then on his palette was limited to black and white. The brush strokes became more direct and dramatic.
Together with Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, Kline was the founder of the so-called ›Action Painting‹.
