  • CommentaryIndiana belongs to a generation of American artists that liberated themselves from the model of Abstract Expressionism and discovered the America of modern cities with their lights and billboards, machines and consumer goods, automobiles and highways for art. With his number and letter images such as ›LOVE‹ and ›EAT‹ he became known as the ›painter of signs‹ and was celebrated as a co-founder of the Pop-Art movement. »Pop«, he said, »is everything art hasn’t been for the last two decades. […] a U-turn back to a representational visual communication.«

In an abandoned warehouse which he occupied for his studio in 1956, he found stencils from the 19th century which he first used for his assemblages and later as models for his paintings. Numbers and counting played a special role in his work. In them the artists saw numerous references and a significant deeper meaning, also in respect of his own background. Historical dates, calendars, highway numbers, numbers on slot machines, gas meters and car license plates were the sources of his ›number paintings‹. In a series from 1964/65 he added a ring to the numbers and wrote the number under the numeral.
