  • CommentaryFor Jörg Immendorff, art—and hence, also painting—was political.
He had already used figurative painting, full of easily comprehensible symbols, to convey his ideas while studying at the Düsseldorf Academy under Joseph Beuys. He wanted anyone to be able to understand his art. Immendorff put topics to canvas, such as in ›Entscheidend Feindbild‹ (Decisive Enemy), that were being suppressed by contemporary society. Here, a monstrous scarecrow with a wooden leg and an eagle talon is standing on an ice floe formed like a broken star, with a tank serving as one of its two heads. The military monster is shrouded in a Wehrmacht
overcoat. The painting was made in the context of a series of graphic works designed to more broadly disseminate the motif.
